Edible CEO Henri Morris talks traceability with international newspaper,
The Epoch Times
"'Made in USA' products can be tainted,"
he says |
BREAKING NEWS
|
Newspaper reporter Genevieve
Long got a surprise when she called Edible CEO Henri Morris seeking information for a story she was writing about public concerns over the safety of food
products imported from China.
Her article, "Made in USA Foods May Be Contaminated," appeared in the Oct. 7
edition of the The Epoch Times, an international newspaper published in New York. Long asked Henri if it was possible for food labeled as 'made in
the U.S.A.' to be contaminated with tainted ingredients from China. After all, she reasoned, the FDA has stepped up efforts to increase screening of food
imports.
"The FDA screening may not cover food ingredients,"
Henri told the reporter. "The ingredients may be exempt." He explained that despite FDA assurances that they are closely watching imports, there is a loophole
that can allow potentially hazardous food ingredients to make their way into the food supply without public knowledge.
The Answer?
The answer is better accountability and traceability of all
inventory items, Henri says. He calls the current system "lamentable." The FDA checks are being made where accountability should be at its strongest, he
says. "Instead, they are being made where accountability is at its weakest."
Chris Waldrop, director of the Food Policy Institute at the Consumer Federation
of America was also quoted in the article.

KILL
Your Accounting Fears With These Three Tips
If you're a wholesale food distributor who suffers from that age-old business disease
called fear of accounting, take heart -- you're not alone. Most accounting fears can be
easily traced to one thing: Failure to observe accounting basics -- the tried-and-true, fundamental accounting practices that produce bigger profits, or .
. . astounding losses.
Here's three accounting basics that will keep the profits flowing:
- Don't put off reconciling your bank accounts --
It's easy to put off reviewing your bank accounts, but do so at your own peril. This is Job
One when it comes to keeping a company in the black.Reconciling daily will (a) keep you on top of your cash position so that you always know
what is available to pay your vendors, (b) avoid embarrassing bounced check or NSF fees, and (c) uncover internal control problems before they
become fraud issues.
- Conduct physical inventories often -- Do you really know how
much inventory you have or where it all is? Are you depending on gut instinct to get you through, or on the random reports of employees to
size up your supplies? Here's a tip to live by: No matter how good your accounting software is, if you are not also conducting regular
physical inventories, the numbers in your system will turn from reality to fantasy. That equates to hard cash out the door.
- Make the Profit and Loss statement your new best friend -- Many food
distributors think a P&L statement is necessary only at tax time. That kind of thinking can come back and bite you. Your P&L is an amazing
tool that can provide a crystal-clear look deep inside the nuts and bolts of a company's operations. It is your road map to profitability.
Without it, you miss trends that make you money - or lose you money. There's no way it can help, however, unless i t is accurate and
up-to-date. Read and study it on a regular basis,
